ECONOMIC EDUCATION

It needs to be a regional effort to ensure that collegiate sorors, as they navigate their financial assets and prepare to enter the job market, understand the current economy and how they can set themselves up for financial success.  If we, as region, fail to provide them with the resources to learn,  they may not be equipped to continue their lifetime commitment financially.

That is why I proposed Investment REaDy, a monthly interactive webinar that would extend beyond  National Financial Fortitude month. Investment REaDy would teach basic finance knowledge including but not limited to entrepreneurship skills, knowledge in investment and real estate. Additionally, it would provide sorors with information on what their current local and state economies may look like as they are preparing to become financially independent. Investment REaDy would ensure that collegiates have the proper financial knowledge, strategy and team as they transition from a collegiate soror to an alumnae soror.

ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT

Currently, The Farwest has implemented  Destination 22 initiatives as a means to fundraise for collegiate attendance at Sorority events. While those initiatives may raise money to attend Sorority events, they do not provide collegiate chapters with financial longevity in the end.

My proposed initiative, Vivian’s House Endowment Fund, would provide sorors with the adequate funds in preparation for their yearly programs and to attend Sorority events. This would include a Fall fundraising effort with the Farwest Region working in tandem with collegiate chapters.

This yearly  fundraising initiative would encourage local alumnae chapter sorors and sorors that were initiated through a Farwest collegiate chapter to donate funding for that chapter at the beginning of the academic year, allowing there to be a head start for funding for Sorority event attendance and the following programming:  Founders Week, May Week, Delta Week, etc.

Based on past costs for programming, the collegiate chapter would set their financial goal.

We, as a region, expect exemplary programming, but we cannot have exemplary programming without the proper finances. This fund would not replace typical fundraising programs, but would ultimately provide some economic support and sustainability to collegiate chapters.

MY EXPERIENCE

Most recently, I led and aided in the rollout of outreach initiatives for the Daily Bruin Scholarship Fund, leading to $34k in donations. I directly was able to see the impact of the scholarship as the first Black woman to receive the scholarship twice.

I have an extensive amount of knowledge regarding business and the economy based on my training as a UC Berkeley Business Academy for Youth (BBAY)  Teaching Assistant. As a TA, I taught business and financial education, which furthered my understanding of both respective fields.
