FARWEST CONNECT

Networking opportunities often provide collegiate sorors with the opportunity to discuss and learn more about their potential career field.  Currently, we have the Farwest Region Collegiate Pathways series, which teaches sorors lessons about career preparation. Farwest Connect would divert from this series and provide direct and local networking opportunities.

There are three components of Farwest Connect that Sorors should note:

Networking Nights & Career Fairs

Bimonthly networking nights where collegiate sorors would get the opportunity to network with their local alumnae Sorors. Quarterly Career Fairs would allow sorors to have access to sorors across industries and access directly to companies of their interest.

Professional Directory

Sorors would have access to a career based database, where collegiate and alumnae sorors could connect based on their career field. This directory would be updated based on submissions from sorors. The directory would list sorors’ career/career aspirations, LinkedIn profile, portfolios and email addresses.

The reason why Farwest Connect has these three components is to accommodate the variety of personalities of sorors. Some sorors may be more extroverted and thrive in Networking Nights and Career Fairs, while some sorors would prefer to network on their own. Either way, sorors would have the opportunity to network and further connect themselves with the Farwest Region's constructive resources.

MY EXPERIENCE

I have had the opportunity to lead and be a part of two major networking nights within my community. I have also maintained an alumni directory of over 6,000 entries, with the purpose of increasing networking opportunities with the Daily Bruin. My success within these programs has led me to believe that this would not only be successful within the Farwest, but would be extremely impactful.

DELTA LINKS

One of the things that we learn as collegiate sorors within our work in Delta is perseverance. Another thing we learn is who we are.

Collegiate sorors often have a lot on their plates: balancing their academics, their work in Delta, their jobs, and other extracurriculars as well as family emergencies. At times, this may allow them to feel anxious or overwhelmed as a whole, with the worst effect, burnout, often being the end result.

Collegiates may turn to their local mental health resources, on or off campus, and may  find  it par or  subpar. I believe that we should provide our collegiate sorors with an outlet to discuss life’s challenges and find ways to manage them as we are our sister’s keepers.

Delta Links would be monthly virtual one on one therapy sessions. These therapy sessions would be led by  volunteer licensed sorors in the mental health profession as well as other volunteer licensed mental health professionals, allowing sorors to feel supported through our Sisterhood as they navigate challenges.

MY POINT OF VIEW

Mental health resources on college campuses are not on par and sorors may not feel as though their experiences as Black women would not be understood. In my experience, there is nothing comparable to talking to your sorors and discussing ways that you could go about managing these challenges. It connects one closer to our beloved Sorority and to the sorors around them.
